After Jesus had spoken, a Pharisee invited him to dine at his home. He entered and reclined at table to eat. The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not observe the prescribed washing before the meal. The Lord said to him, “Oh you Pharisees! Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder and evil. You fools! Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside? But as to what is within, give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.”
Jesus is more concerned about what is in our hearts than what we put in our mouth and the Pharisee’s could not see that. They were all about “what looks good” and how people see them. Remind you of anyone? We all know people who make a good pretense of faith and prayer, but they think they fool others. No matter who is taken in, God is not fooled. He knows your heart and sees through pretense. What does He see in your heart?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to keep my heart pure so I live and work in you, not the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
