Some Pharisees and Herodians were sent to Jesus to ensnare him in his speech. They came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion. You do not regard a person’s status but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?” Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them, “Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius to look at.” They brought one to him and he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They replied to him, “Caesar’s.” So Jesus said to them, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” They were utterly amazed at him.
Maybe they were amazed because the High Priests and others in the priestly class were very involved in the Roman court. They bowed to Caesar and followed their rules. Jesus was saying that they should give to God what is God’s – loyalty and obedience. Where does your obedience lie? Do you allow the State to dictate your morality or God? If it is not God, your eternal life may be in jeopardy.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I know we need rules in this world and the state is charged with keeping order, but they are overstepping their bounds more and more. Legalizing the death of innocent babies, people who are ill, mentally ill, the aged and infirm. Father, I offer our government up to you and I pray that their hearts and minds will open to you and your truth – the only truth and rescind those laws that go against your morality. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen and Alleluia!
The heart of the just one is firm, trusting in the Lord, Alleluia!
