12-31-2016 The Seventh Day in the Octave of Christmas Gospel Jn 1:1-18

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

A man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him.

But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God.

And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only-begotten Son, full of grace and truth.

John testified to him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’” From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace, because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. The only-begotten Son, God, who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him.

Jesus came to save us, He gave His life so that we may have a second chance to live. He never gives up on us and He is the God of second chances. We are at the end of an old year, we are being given another chance to live the life that God wants for each of us. A life of freedom, lived in love, joy and happiness with the promise of eternal life. Will you take this opportunity? Will you put aside the ways of the world and turn your life over to God? His love is worth more than the world can offer you. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I turned my life over to you and I give you praise for all the peace, joy and happiness I have received from you. You set me free Lord and I thank you! In Jesus’ holy name, Amen!!

Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice!

When the magi had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.” Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, Out of Egypt I called my son.

When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the region of Galilee. He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, He shall be called a Nazorean.

Joseph was a true man of God who listened to the messages of the Lord and kept his family safe. He is an example of how all fathers and step-fathers should treat their families. Listen to the Lord, follow His word and protect his family. What kind of father are you?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for sending St. Joseph to protect your Son and His Mother. Joseph is a model for all fathers and I praise those who follow his example. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen.

Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways.

Beloved: The way we may be sure that we know Jesus is to keep his commandments. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: whoever claims to abide in him ought to walk just as he walked.

Beloved, I am writing no new commandment to you but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. And yet I do write a new commandment to you, which holds true in him and among you, for the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. Whoever says he is in the light, yet hates his brother, is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is nothing in him to cause a fall. Whoever hates his brother is in darkness; he walks in darkness and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

How much clearer does the word of God need to be? John tells us in plain language what we need to do to live in the light of God. Why do people insist on living in darkness? Power? Prestige? None of these brings what living within the law of the Lord does. Do you live in the light or the dark? Think you have everything that makes your life perfect? If you follow the Lord, you do. If not, you do not, you are just fooling yourself.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, living in the light of your word and your love brought perfection to my life. You give me what I need and you give it to me with love, bringing me joy and happiness. In Jesus’ holy name I give you praise, Amen!

When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi. Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet:

“A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be consoled, since they were no more.”

Herod was afraid. He was afraid that this new King would take over his throne and he would not have the lifestyle and prestige he has as king. He did not know that Jesus came to change the world, not steal his throne. These children paid the price for his fear. Who has paid the price for your fear? Are you afraid that if you allow Christ into your life you will no longer have an extravagant lifestyle? Live as you want? Replace your fear with belief in Him and your life will never be the same. Replace your fear with the freedom that comes from living in Christ.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you replaced my fear with joy. You gave me the freedom I needed to live my life in you and for you and in Jesus’ holy name I give you praise, honor and glory, Amen!

Our soul has been rescued like a bird from the fowler’s snare.

Beloved: What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we looked upon and touched with our hands concerns the Word of life— for the life was made visible; we have seen it and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was made visible to us— what we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; for our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing this so that our joy may be complete.

“…so that our joy may be complete.” This was written so YOU will read and believe. This was written so YOU will see and believe. This was written so that YOU will learn about Jesus and believe. Do you? Or do you deny the truth that is in front of you? Is your joy complete?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, your truth has been proclaimed, it has been seen and it has been written about. My joy is complete in YOU! In Jesus’ holy name, Amen.

Rejoice in the Lord, you just!

Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people. Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated with Stephen, but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.

When they heard this, they were infuriated, and they ground their teeth at him. But he, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together. They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. As they were stoning Stephen, he called out “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

Stephen was doing the work of the Lord, spreading His word and telling His truth. This brought him condemnation from those in his world. Today we suffer a similar fate when we try to spread God’s truth. In many countries people are stoned and killed for the truth. Here, we are verbally stoned and abused because we speak the truth of the Lord. Through it all, we can see Jesus if we look and believe.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, your word is my truth and my truth is your word. There is nothing I can believe that brings eternal salvation, except your word. In Jesus’ holy name, I pray, Amen!

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
