May the word of the Lord fill you with love and bring you peace.

An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.”

Then John said in reply, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company.” Jesus said to him, “Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”

Just when we think we have it together and are doing a good job, Jesus throws us a curve. “For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.” Does not sound like the gospel of today, does it? The gospel of today says we need to protect the most vulnerable by causing or allowing them to die. The children Jesus tells us to receive in His name, we are killing them to make our life easier. Is that what Jesus says here? No it is not. His Gospel is one of grace and mercy, the gospel of the world today tells us to eliminate the burden in the name of mercy. Do you listen to that nonsense?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to speak up against this gospel that the world teaches. Your mercy does not kill children and the most vulnerable. Your Gospel tells us to protect them and bring them to you. May I always listen to your words and follow your path. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen.

Incline your ear to me and hear my word.
