Jesus said to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same? So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
What a challenge – “so be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect”! We forget that the way the Lord blesses us – waking, sunshine, rain, sunsets – He also blesses His enemies. Because we all have the opportunity to repent. We all have the opportunity to love God and do His will. Be kind to all, even if they hate you, love others, even if they do not love you. Then you will be doing the will of your heavenly Father.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to see you in all people, those I like and those I do not, those who like me and those who do not. Doing your will is my goal in life, so I too may spend my eternal life with you. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen.
Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.
