I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.

Paul is telling us not to listen to the message of the world. The world has nothing to offer except eternal damnation. If you offer yourself to God, He will take all you offer and give you eternal life. Death comes to those who do not do the will of God. First it is the death of the soul and then death of the body. Only you can choose between life and death. What is your choice?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to continue to fight against the ways of the world. Lord, what we are allowing to happen will bring death to us all. Help us to spread your love and your message, starting in our own homes, neighborhoods and work places. Help us to be you in this age of relativism. In Jesus’ holy name we ask all this, Amen.

My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.

Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, so that no human being might boast before God. It is due to him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, so that, as it is written, Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.

What is the Lord calling you to do? Are you listening? Are you afraid to say yes because you think you cannot do it? The Lord does not choose the equipped, He equips those He calls. Take a step out in faith and you will accomplish miracles!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for having more faith in my than I have in myself. May I answer you whenever you call. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.

8-29-2014 Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist Gospel Mk 6:17-29

Passion of John the Baptist

Herod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee. Herodias’ own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.” He even swore many things to her, “I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom.” She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the Baptist.” The girl hurried back to the king’s presence and made her request, “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in turn gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Herod had John in prison for speaking the truth, for being honest and speaking the word of God. He knew in his deepest soul that killing John was wrong, but he allowed lust and pride to lead him to the act that he knew was wrong. John died for Our Lord, Herod condemned himself by his actions. What do you allow to rule your life? The word of God or the fake promises of the world? Are you condeming yourself?

Prayer: Father thank you for the truth of your promises. Your word will bring everlasting life, help me to always listen to you and not the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

Jesus said to his disciples: “Stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.

“Who, then, is the faithful and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household to distribute to them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on his arrival finds doing so. Amen, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property. But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is long delayed,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with drunkards, the servant’s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”

Our Lord wants us to stay awake! We need to be awake to resist the temptations of the world, they sneak in when we least suspect them – just like a thief in the night. We must pay attention because we do not know the time or place that He will come. If we are not, He will come and catch us unawares and then it will be too late. Stay awake and be watchful, your place in eternity depends upon it.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, may I always keep my attention focused on you, may I be alert to the temptations of the world. Help me to avoid them and always follow you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I will praise your name for ever, Lord.

Jesus said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth. Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous, and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’ Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets; now fill up what your ancestors measured out!”

What are you? Are you humble and meek on the outside but cold and calculating on the inside? The Lord knows what is in our hearts and will know the truth. If you live a lie you are only fooling yourself. Be honest, be beautiful, live the truth and you will be set free.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, my heart belongs to you. May I never betray you or your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

8-26-2014 Reading 1 2 Thes 2:1-3a, 14-17

We ask you, brothers and sisters, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him, not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a “spirit,” or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand. Let no one deceive you in any way.

To this end he has also called you through our Gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.

No one knows the time and place the Lord is coming. We are told not to be deceived by false teachers. Do you follow the teachings that the Disciples of Our Lord have handed down? Do you follow only the ones that are written down or do you believe the traditions taught by them? If you do not  follow both, you are not doing what the Lord has asked. Think about what you do, say and believe. It may not be the whole truth.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of the Church and Her teachings, that allow me to do as you say and follow your commands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Lord comes to judge the earth.

8-25-2014 Gospel Mt 23:13-22

Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the Kingdom of heaven before men. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You traverse sea and land to make one convert, and when that happens you make him a child of Gehenna twice as much as yourselves.

“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If one swears by the temple, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gold of the temple, one is obligated.’ Blind fools, which is greater, the gold, or the temple that made the gold sacred? And you say, ‘If one swears by the altar, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gift on the altar, one is obligated.’ You blind ones, which is greater, the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? One who swears by the altar swears by it and all that is upon it; one who swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it; one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who is seated on it.”

Jesus tells us to be careful what we teach and say. If we lead others astray, if we swear on false idols or by false gods, we ourselves will be damned. Be careful what you swear by, you will be held accountable by our Lord.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for my open heart and mind that I may always give you the glory and never lead anyone astray. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen.

Proclaim God’s marvelous deeds to all the nations.
