8-31-2013 Gospel Mt 25:14-30

Link to today’s readings:

Jesus told his disciples this parable: “A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one–to each according to his ability. Then he went away. Immediately the one who received five talents went and traded with them, and made another five. Likewise, the one who received two made another two. But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master’s money. After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ Then the one who had received two talents also came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two talents. See, I have made two more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant.  Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a demanding person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter; so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground. Here it is back.’ His master said to him in reply, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter? Should you not then have put my money in the bank so that I could have got it back with interest on my return? Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten. For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’”

What do you do with the talents and treasures the Lord gives to you? Do you use them and multiply them or do you bury them so no one knows you have them? We are all given gifts by Our Lord and it is up to us to use them, to share them with others so that they multiply. If you bury them, you are wasting the gifts Our Lord has given to you. Are you ready to bring them out and use them? Try it, you will see how generous He is and what blessings you have been given.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to always use the gifts and talents that you have given to me. Holy Spirit, help me to discover my gifts and guide me in the way of Our Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen

The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice.

8-30-2013 Reading 1 1 Thes 4:1-8

Link to today’s readings:

Brothers and sisters, we earnestly ask and exhort you in the Lord Jesus that, as you received from us how you should conduct yourselves to please God–and as you are conducting yourselves–you do so even more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

This is the will of God, your holiness: that you refrain from immorality, that each of you know how to acquire a wife for himself in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion as do the Gentiles who do not know God; not to take advantage of or exploit a brother or sister in this matter, for the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you before and solemnly affirmed. For God did not call us to impurity but to holiness. Therefore, whoever disregards this, disregards not a human being but God, who also gives his Holy Spirit to you.

Why do we ignore God’s word? How much clearer does He need to be? We ignore the Word of God so we can do what “feels good” – not what is right. The Lord is an avenger – how much longer can we go on doing what we are doing, ignoring His word and living a life of immorality? Who do you want to follow? The world in disobedience or Our Lord in love and truth? I choose God, I choose to live as He asks, sometimes I fail, but I always come back. How about you? Is it time for you to change your life? Do it – for Heaven’s sake.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I pray the world listens to your Word and changes the path it is on. Help me to always follow you, no matter what temptations I face. Holy Spirit, guide me and lead me on right paths. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Rejoice in the Lord, you just!

8-29-2013 Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist Gospel Mk 6:17-29

Passion of John the Baptist

 Link to today’s readings:

Herod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee. Herodias’ own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.” He even swore many things to her, “I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom.” She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the Baptist.” The girl hurried back to the king’s presence and made her request, “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in turn gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Are you willing to speak against what is wrong? Do you stand up for Christ and His teachings when the need arises? Do you have the faith and strength of St. John the Baptist? Are you willing to give up everything – including your life – for Jesus? I am not sure I do, but with the help of Christ I will. Stand up for what is right, for what Christ teaches. That’s all He asks of us – to be faithful. Are you willing?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, fill me with the courage and strength I need to stand up for you and what you teach. Today’s world is filled with opportunities to defend you. Holy Spirit guide me to speak the truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!

8-28-2013 Memorial of Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church Gospel Mt 23:27-32

St. Augustine

 Link to today’s readings:

Jesus said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth. Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous, and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’ Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets; now fill up what your ancestors measured out!”

Are you a hypocrite? Do you put on your “Sunday best” but your insides are grungy? Making others think you are good, but you are just going through the motions? Do you think you are fooling God? He sees you as you are, not as you try to appear to others. Make yourself right with God, put on your “Sunday best” from the inside out. He is worth the best you have to offer. Don’t wait. He has not cleaning fees – a trip to confession is free and freeing. Come get scrubbed.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be as I truly am. May my love for you never turn into a show just to impress other people. Take me as I am, sometimes scrubby but always faithful. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

You have searched me and you know me, Lord.

8-27-2013 Memorial of Saint Monica Gospel Mt 23:23-26

Jesus said: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and fidelity. But these you should have done, without neglecting the others. Blind guides, who strain out the gnat and swallow the camel!

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.”

What does it take to clean the inside of your cup? Do you put on the appearance of piety, faithfulness and truth but not live it? Do you want others to follow you but then you lead them away from the truth? Why? Jesus told the Pharisees what would happen, do you not believe Him? Have you gone to Confession? Talked with a Priest? Talked with Jesus? If you don’t let yourself be guided by the Holy Spirit you are living a lie. You can change, you can become a true disciple. Ask Christ He will help you to find the way – the only true way.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to stay the path with you. To be filled with right truth and to live the way you have ordained. Holy Spirit, guide me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

You have searched me and you know me, Lord.

8-26-2013 Gospel Mt 23:13-22

Link to today’s readings:

Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the Kingdom of heaven before men. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You traverse sea and land to make one convert, and when that happens you make him a child of Gehenna twice as much as yourselves.

“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If one swears by the temple, it means  nothing, but if one swears by the gold of the temple, one is obligated.’ Blind fools, which is greater, the gold, or the temple that made the gold sacred? And you say, ‘If one swears by the altar, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gift on the altar, one is obligated.’ You blind ones, which is greater, the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? One who swears by the altar swears by it and all that is upon it; one who swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it; one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who is seated on it.”

Where is your allegiance? To whom do you swear by? Does your oath belong to God? If not, why not? What is more powerful than Him? What gives you greater glory? God or man? It’s your choice, choose wisely.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, may I always choose you as primary in my life. May I give all I have to you and not to man. Holy Spirit guide me in making right choices.

The Lord takes delight in his people, Alleluia!

8-25-2013 Gospel Lk 13:22-30

Link to today’s readings:

Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He answered them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.  After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ He will say to you in reply, ‘I do not know where you are from. And you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.’ Then he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from.  Depart from me, all you evildoers!’ And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out. And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

What are you doing to be sure you reach the kingdom of Heaven? Just believing isn’t enough. How do you treat others? How do you serve God? Do you just give Him lip service? He wants your heart, mind, body and soul and He wants you to serve Him through service to others. Are you doing enough? I’m not.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to know you better, to love and serve you through your people. Help me to enter through that narrow gate. In Jesus’ name I ask all this, Amen

Go out to all the world and tell the Good News, Alleluia!
